Chapter 6

The doctor was in their room when he got there. In order to not disturb the doctor, Billie stayed outside and tried to calm himself as he watched through the window, but he couldn't.

They were motionless, and the only sign of life they showed was the heart monitor beeping steadily. Billie sat on the ground and brought his legs in so that his knees touched his chin. He crossed his arms on top of them and put his head down.

Tears streamed from his eyes, and for the first time, he felt like a little boy again, like he did when his dad died. 'Why am I crying?' Billie Joe thought, 'They aren't dead... yet'.

The doctor came out of the room, and Billie quickly wiped the tears from his face and stood up.

"How are they?"

"I'm afraid not so good. They are both in a coma, the girl has two broken ribs, and the lady has a broken leg, but both suffered severe trauma to the head. It's a miracle they have survived this long."

"May I go in?"

"Only if you are direct family."

"I do believe I am."

"Then go right on in."

Billie walked straight to Adrienne and took her hand. He was worried about the girl, but more so Adrienne for she had been the love of his life.

"I'm so sorry Adie," Billie said as he stroked her hand.

“Billie,” Adrienne whispered, “She…she did this…she…where is she?...”

“Where is who?”

Billie gently stroked her cheek.

“Where is who?” he asked again.

But there was no reply. Adrienne’s heart rate monitor began racing.

“Oh no! No, Adrienne please, no!”

Billie started panicking again.

“Someone help! Help please!”

Billie began sobbing just as some nurses came in and rushed Adrienne to the emergency room. Billie stayed in the room the cry.

“She’s back…” Alexis stirred.

Billie looked up startled. He had forgotten that she was in the room. He walked over to her bed side.

“Who’s…who’s back?” Billie asked trying to hold back the tears.

“She came…to us while we were in the car…made us wreck,” Alexis mumbled.

“Who? Who is she?”

“She wants me…back. She wants me home.”

“Who Alexis? Who are you talking about?”

“Mom. Lily.”

Billie didn’t know how to respond to what she said.

“That’s impossible!”

But Alexis said nothing. Billie walked out of the room. He couldn’t bear to be in the hospital anymore, even with Adrienne in the ER.
